Producing films is a long process in which an idea evolves into a business undertaking and then into a product that is sold to an audience.
A producer is trailblazer, mentor, strategist, midwife and head of the family all in one. He is so well versed in all the technical, organizational and artistic areas of film production that he has the ability to manage them and can assess the performance quality of his team and partners in order to delegate responsibilities and tasks to them.
A producer is a good storyteller and can identify promising stories. He can act as a dramatic advisor to the scriptwriter and work on the development of the material. He has full command of the grammar of cinematic staging and visual composition. He can detect the creative talent and expertise of a director and can help it to flourish. He can identify good actors as well as the artistic potential of a cinematographer or a set designer – In short: a producer finds talent, supports it and protects it.
The producer also has creative skills when it comes to the finances. He knows how to balance solid business management with a risky venture he deems worthwhile. He can assess the technical processes of film production with regards their cost-benefit calculation, based on reliable knowledge in the area of calculation and controlling.
