BA Director of Photography

Director of Photography Bachelor Program

The camera not only guides the eyes but also the emotions of the viewer – using visual parameters such as resolution, timing, image framing and composition, or through the choice of lens and focus.
The visual design of a film has a major impact on its dramaturgy and thereby on how it is perceived by the audience. This responsibility lies largely in the hands of the director of photography.
Our new 7-semester Director of Photography program offers extensive cinematography training, providing students with the skills required to carry out a solid artistic design of a film’s aesthetic in close collaboration with the director, set designer, sound designer and picture editor. The program also supports the students in the development of their own personal and distinctive style.
In a society increasingly shaped by moving images, the professional demands on the job of the director of photography have continued to grow in significance. Digital technologies have expanded the spectrum of audiovisual forms of expression and visual design many times over.
The Director of Photography bachelor program reflects these developments at its core: The program’s curriculum provides access to the latest technologies as well as artistic and scientific trends.
With a clear focus on the aspect of visual design, the goal of this undergraduate program is to convey skills that reflect the range of impact that cinematography has on the film production process. The decisive factors include developing dramaturgical, technical and organizational competence as well as the ability to position personal work within an academic framework as well as comprehend economic interdependencies.
The soft skills qualification training provides the students with the necessary tools to lead work processes both individually and in a team.

Especially in the project modules, the camera students collaborate closely with students of the Film Studies program (Directing, Screenwriting, Creative Producing) and the Editing Picture and Sound program, as well as other further education programs, in particular Set Design, Costume Design and Acting. The program further enjoys a cooperation with the »Artistic Cinematography« program of the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.
Both Cologne as a top media center as well as the intensive collaboration network of the ifs within the industry offer the students of the ifs an excellent environment in which to generate new connections, deepen working relationships and build new personal networks.
