STUDY PROGRAMS

With our Film Studies Program with a specialization in ScreenwritingFilm DirectingCreative Producing, the ifs is the first publicly funded film school in Germany to offer the international »Bachelor of Arts« degree. This is made possible through a franchising agreement with out partner, the University of Applied Sciences Cologne.

Especially in the film industry, a flexible, practically oriented and modularized program is an ideal form of education as it can better meet the constantly evolving demands and expectations of the industry. The structure of our international Bachelor program, set for seven semesters, enables us to adapt easily and swiftly to the current developments in both education and the market.

Fueled by the success of our Film Studies Program, now in its fifth run, we are now applying the Bachelor model to the area of film editing. With the new program »Editing Picture and Sound« that commenced in March 2009, we have developed an undergraduate study program for picture and sound editing that is unique in its form and structure.
With the start of the winter semester 2012/13 the former »Editing Picture & Sound« program is part of the new 7-semester Bachelor program Digital Film Arts (with specialization in Editing Picture & Sound and Visual Arts).

The new 7-semester Director of Photography Program started in the winter semester 2010/11 as the third Bachelor program to be offered at the ifs. The Director of Photography Program offers extensive cinematography training, providing students with the skills required to carry out a solid artistic design of a film’s aesthetic in close collaboration with the director, set designer, sound designer and picture editor. The program also supports the students in the development of their own personal and distinctive style.

In the winter semester 2011/12 the first Postgraduate Program MA Screenwriting at the ifs started in Cooperation with the School of Media, Music and Performance of the University of Salford in Manchester, UK and the Art and Media School of Tampere, Finland. This program offers writers an environment in which to develop scripts for an international market.

In the winter semester 2013/14 the second Postgraduate Program MA Serial Storytelling will be launched. The program is the first master's program in Germany to focus exclusively on writing for TV series and other serial formats.

You can find further detailed information concerning the three study programs and the Postgraduate Programs MA Screenwriting and MA Serial Storytelling on the following pages.
