Like no other medium, the TV-Series has the power to influence the way entire generations of audiences view humanity and society. Especially in turbulent times like today, when more and more people are turning away from traditional journalism and towards social media, how viewers see themselves and their neighbors reflected in their favorite shows plays an important role.
While the ifs’ MA Serial Storytelling usually focuses on so-called »quality series«, this evening will deal with the unique potential of series formats which are rarely discussed in the feuilleton – daily and weekly dramas. With authentic characters and socially relevant topics treated at eye level, committed series writers succeed in reaching even those audiences who usually don’t participate in intellectual discourses. John Vorhaus, renowned comedy expert from the US, pioneered this approach in the 1990s and 200s through his work with telenovelas in Central America. Serial Storytelling professor Joachim Friedmann draws parallels to his own experiences and other examples in German television. Together they will talk about opportunities and challenges for series writers in the current situation in Europe and the USA.
