MANAGED MAGIC – HOW TO DESIGN A WRITERS’ ROOM
07.02.2020 um 10:00 - 09.02.2020 um 17:00
In the age of streaming services and serialized TV shows, collaborative writing is not only more desirable than ever – it’s a necessity. That’s because the creative goals of any single episode are subordinate to the immense effort of telling a season-long story.
But what is the difference between a writing team and a writers’ room? What are the skills and talents needed, and how exactly is the collaborative process structured? What are the roles, tasks, and responsibilities of showrunner, head writer, and staff writers? How are the various steps of story and script development timed? And what are the most effective tools and techniques for meeting both, high quality writing standards and the demanding production schedule of a professional series production? In this 3-day seminar aimed at both producers and writers, award winning TV writer and showrunner
Morgan Gendel will illuminate the fundamentals of a well-run writers’ room. Via hands-on exercises and lectures drawn from Gendel’s 30-year career, participants will learn:
– How to communicate more effectively about story.
– How to identify, structure, and lead the various steps of the collaborative script development process.
– How to manage – or function among – several writers who are all working on what is essentially a super-sized feature film script.
– How producers can best insert themselves into this process to achieve their goals – and how writers can help facilitate this.
Lastly, the most important lesson of all: how a writers’ room can perform the alchemy needed to transcend all the rules and formulas and achieve that spark of genius – the undefinable magic of a hit series.
Morgan Gendel has 30 years’ experience in TV as a network executive, writer, producer, and showrunner. The Hugo Award winner has written or produced more than 200 episodes of television, including »Law & Order«, »Drop Dead Diva« and »The 100«, on which he recently served as co-executive producer. He was showrunner and/or executive producer on »Spider-Man«, »V.I.P.« and »The Dresden Files«. His original scifiseries »Isolation« is currently in development with SONY International, and his debut novel »Planet 6« was recently published. As a consultant to Pro7, he mentored writers of the TV series »Unschuldig« and did the same for the Russian company GoodStory and the series »Sweet Life«. Outside of the writing realm, Gendel was shortlisted for a NASA grant for his concept of an innovative habitat for astronauts on Mars.
