ifs-film of the week: Royal Affairs


On the occasion of its 20th anniversary the ifs presents a #ifsfilmderwoche online every Tuesday.

The science fiction comedy »Royal Affairs« (2017) by Jade Li (Director, Idea), Till Kleinau (Idea), Nikolaas Meinshausen (Production) Christophe Poulles (DoP) and Antonia-Marleen Klein (Editing) was the first film shot in the ifs studio. The studio construction of a »space embassy« was entirely in the hands of the participants of the further education course Szenenbild. The students in the Digital Film Arts major were responsible for the extensive design of CGI and VFX elements: Mikko Beste, Cem Karayakas, Tim Hennig, Till Kleinau Mick Mahler, Nils Nißing and Christoph Willerscheidt.

Kris Marshall (e.g. »Love Actually«, »Death at a funeral«) and Tony Way (e.g. »Game of Thrones«) could be won for the leading roles of the science fiction comedy. At the Max Ophüls Film Festival »Royal Affairs« was nominated in the categories »Best Short Film« and »Audience Award Short Film«.

Director Jade Li
Jade Li studied directing in the bachelor program Film at the ifs and graduated in 2018. Since 2020 she is studying Directing Fiction at the NFTS (National Film and Television School) in London. producer Nikolaas Meinshausen

Nikolaas Meinshausen also studied Creative Production in the BA Film at the ifs. Afterwards he completed a Master in Film and Television Production at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf. Since 2018 he has also been working for the Cologne production company Bantry Bay Productions in Berlin and is responsible for the youth series »DRUCK«.

Director of Photography Christophe Poulles
Christophe Poulles studied camera at the ifs. As a DoP he is mainly active in the field of documentary film. His works include »Compass«, »Kunst? Für Beifahrer?« as well as commercials for Lidl.

Editor Antonia-Marleen Klein
Antonia-Marleen Klein studied audio-visual editing at the ifs. Since graduating in 2018 she has been working as a freelance editor. She is currently doing her master in editing at the Film Academy in Vienna and is also working as a screenwriter.

VFX Designer Cem Karayakas
Cem Karayakas studied Digital Film Arts at the ifs and graduated in 2018. Afterwards he worked as a 2D and 3D animator and as an animation producer. Currently he is studying in the Master Animation at Savannah College of Art and Design.

VFX Designer Tim Henning
Tim Henning studied Digital Film Arts at the ifs and also graduated in 2018. Since 2018 he is working as a freelance 3D artist. In 2019 he also worked as a lighting artist at MPC in Canada.

VFX Designer Mick Mahler
Mick Mahler studied VFX & Animation in his Bachelor’s degree at the ifs. In 2017 he received a scholarship from the »Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes«. For his animation series »Kira and Prokki« (TWENTY TWO Film GmbH) he received a grant from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW in 2019. In 2020 he participated in the Creator College NRW.

VFX Designer Mikko Best
Mikko Beste also studied VFX & Animation at the ifs. After his studies in 2018 he worked in the field of animation, compositing and motion design for different projects: »Darknet – The Beginning: Flying Uwe« (2019), »serious – the series quartet« (2020), »braked« (2020, episode 1-5).

Costume Designer Dominik Schmitt
Dominik Schmitt completed the further education costume design at the ifs. Afterwards he designed among other things the costume design for the 1st season of the TNT comedy series »Other Parents«.
