NAOMI KANTOR was born in Montreal, Canada in 1987 and was raised in Israel between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. She studied Film in the Sam Spiegel school for film and television in the 5 years’ director’s program and her diploma film “seeking whales” was screened in the Beijing student film festival 2013. After completing the studies she worked as a freelancer (research, editing, casting) in several film, television and indie productions in Israel while developing her own scripts and projects as an aspiring film director. In the MA program Digital Narratives, the fiction film/narrative film has remained her main focus, and her project revolved around a short fiction film which was accomplished in the course of the studies with the financial support of the NRW film and media foundation. The film Es war schoen tells an autobiographically inspired story of a young Israeli woman who is trying to adapt to her new life in Germany. Using an aesthetic language that ranges between a drama and an absurdist comedy, it focuses on the emotional struggle with loneliness and the constant cultural clashes the protagonist faces in her new environment. In her theoretical research Naomi examined the short film and the transformation of its aesthetic and economic value in the digital age.
