PERSONAL STATEMENT:
»Experimenting openly with content and materials to achieve artistic goals – this is the attitude I want to pass on to students. The heart of my teaching lies in the grammar of the audiovisual language for moving images. This involves, for example, relating questions of narrative, composition, the ‘rhythm’ of a particular scene to the demands of our time. The intensive examination of these aspects should enable students to analyse how different techniques create a characteristic aesthetic – and help them to find their own film language.«

Prof. Dr. Joachim Friedmann
Serial Storytelling
Joachim Friedmann is a German screenwriter, comic writer, developer of online formats, and media scholar. He worked for popular TV series like »In aller Freundschaft«, »Die Camper«, »Der letzte Bulle (The Last Cop)«, and »Die Lindenstraße«. As a comic writer, he is the only German to write »Donald Duck« stories in English. He created the comics series »Lais and Ben« (Carlsen Publishing House) and wrote the comic adaptation of the TV movie »Mörderische Entscheidung« with Oliver Hirschbiegel. Another focus of his work is interactive, online-based formats and games. In this field, he was responsible for concept and storytelling of the transmedia project centering on the DFB mascot »Paule« and designed the award-winning interactive learning game »Die Schlaumäuse«. Since 2001, he has been teaching dramaturgy, series development, and series writing at the University of Hildesheim and at various film schools. In 2017 he became professor of Serial Storytelling at ifs internationale filmschule köln. Friedmann’s dissertation on »Transmedia Narrative: Narrative Design in Literature, Film, Graphic Novel and Game« was published in 2016, his textbook »Storytelling« (UTB) in 2019.

PERSONAL STATEMENT:
»Serial storytelling does not begin with the ›Sopranos‹ and ›Six Feet Under‹, but with the ›Odyssey‹ and the ›Mahabharata‹. Serial and epic storytelling is a trans-historic and transcultural phenomenon. On this basis, I will work together with the students to create contemporary and future-oriented serial formats, explore the possibilities of interactive and transmedia narrative, and show that artistic thinking and marketability are not mutually exclusive.«

PERSONAL STATEMENT:
»The students give me the feeling that the fronts and the strict boundary lines in German film – between ›film as art‹ and ›commercial film‹, between pure craftsmanship and applied art – are gradually beginning to open up. Maybe we will be able to push this development even further.«

»The world becomes a stage for the stories we tell. Space and place are defined by their narrative demands, provide the basis for the characters, and must remain true to the message. PERSONAL STATEMENT:
»While watching a film, the outside world recedes. All you have to do is look and listen. Films set perception in motion and transport it to ever new, familiar or never-before-seen places. Films form a particular, perceivable world that discloses knowledge about itself and about the reality beyond the images. For me, Film Studies means to learn together with students from films and through films something we do not know yet.«

»Your curiosity about the story of the world you are telling is the basis for everything. Encountering this reality with a discerning eye, approaching it again and again from both inside and out, forgetting yourself in the process – that is the true work and the adventure of writing. PERSONAL STATEMENT:
»In my professional life as a film producer it has always been important to me to give talented people a chance. In the Masterclass Non-Fiction at the ifs, which I have been leading since 2009, I have always supported the participants internally in working through complex topics in such a way that they find audiences in the end, and in doing so, break new and unexpected ground – this is how many of the material could be realized. I look forward to passing on my experience to students in the Masterclass in the future and encouraging them to work innovatively, to think outside the box and to look beyond their own national borders.«

»Given the current pressure to innovate coming from new, digital players and changing viewing habits, it’s hard to imagine a more exciting time for the entertainment genre. The MA Entertainment Producing adds a ‘Learning by Understanding’ in the best possible way to the ‘Learning by Doing’ principle which is so prevalent in the entertainment field – a great initiative from the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and ifs given the genre’s growing importance. I am looking forward to helping shape this new course of study and to working with my colleagues from the industry to prepare students for future forms of entertainment production. We are looking to promote originality as well as an awareness of the interplay between economic and social responsibility through a critical examination of the genre and an open exchange with the industry.«

PERSONAL STATEMENT:
»The art of film making is constantly changing. The creation of moving images with the help of digital technology offers us almost infinite possibilities. It is important to always set these possibilities in relationship to the idea and the basic concept. This is the only way to adopt the combination of art and technology as one’s own. These are exciting times and I really enjoy going that way with the students at ifs.«

PERSONAL STATEMENT:
»We filmmakers are storytellers. We shape our stories and our stories shape us. Working in documentary necessitates very good preparation in order to be able to make narrative decisions in the moment. Knowledge of the film-narrative crafts is essential. Another important aspect of the program is working together with the students to explore, understand and develop working methods. Bringing these two aspects of film work together – filmmaking skill and mastery on the one hand, and personal development on the other – has always been at the core of my teaching work. From the initial idea to the final product, making a film requires stamina, reflection, and a good sense of humour.«

PERSONAL STATEMENT:
»My goal is to see and hear together with the students, to sharpen the senses in order to recognize the substantial inside of a material and to transform it into pictures.
Every image designer has two identities. On the one hand, the technical craftsmanship, on the other hand the artistic, creative identity.
I would like to support students in merging these two identities in order to develop visual concepts and implement them technically. Only in this way can we serve a story and become creative partners in the process of making a film.
The students should get to know the visual realization of a film as a creative process based on the division of labour, in which the image designers are involved at an early stage in considerations about the development of the story, to think in terms of content, and then to position themselves as a mediator between all the trades.«

And, how do I develop an aesthetic persuasiveness, a self-assured imagery? Throughout the DoP studies, we are dedicated to meet these questions with a formal and aesthetic perspective, trying to find answers especially with regard to content.«

The ifs mourns the loss of a great artist, wonderful teacher and good friend.
Born in Prague in 1946, David Slama was one of the leading cameramen in German-language film. He has worked with many German directors, including Adolf Winkelmann, Philipp Kadelbach, Andreas Prochaska and Luc Bondy, and together with his mentor and friend Michael Ballhaus for Martin Scorsese.
