While the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 rages trough the German Conferedation, a war-weary Saxon flees from an overambitious Prussian into a church. The Saxon gets fatally injured in the subsequent gunfight. They entrench themselves after that, waiting for the other one to make a mistake. In doing so, they start to talk and their initial animosity slowly develops into a personal connection but the Saxon dies from his wounds before they can reconcile. Faced with the bitter reality of war, the Prussian leaves the church a broken man.
