Germany 1916. The First World War is in full swing, everything is ruled by misery, decomposition and decay. In a little village the outsider MARGA (45) is fighting for everyday survival. Since her husband Otto disappeared during the war, she steals potatoes and home distilled Schnaps to keep the wolf from the door. Her resolut manner quickly makes her an outsider in the village.

The twelve year old HANS is fascinated by Marga and literally follows her. As his actions culminate into a severe accident, she sees the end to the friendship coming. However the blood hungry gang does not pick her up, the kept his mouth shut. Inquisitive Marg proceeds to Hans’ sickbed. He grabbed his chance: somebody must take care of him- and who else than Marga would do so? They develop a friendship from the erstwhile difficult relationship. Marga even manufactures a wooden leg prosthesis, since his leg had to be amputated.

The harmony between both only lasts shortly and is abruptly ruined by the arrival of Hans brother FRIEDRICH (22). Powered by the war and Friedrichs jealously towards Marga, Friedrich becomes the leader of the village and convinces Hans to reveal Marga and drowns her in the village, whilst everybody is watching.
