For 23-year-old Mít, living between two worlds is nothing new. As if at the push of a button, she can switch her identity between the tradition-conscious, Vietnamese daughter and the self-determined, queer Berlin woman. At the weekly dinner at her grandmother Roan’s apartment, she is asked about her love life in typical Vietnamese fashion. Her 48-year-old mother Mai, on contrary, puts more emphasis on her daughter successfully completing her studies than on finding a proper husband. Either way – Mít has neither. Instead, she is dating Lara, who is the same age. When their affair develops into something more committed, Mít feels the need not to have to hide anymore. But before she can muster the courage to leave her parents’ nest, grandmother Roan is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Roan must move out of her small apartment, and she cannot take the ancestral altar, which has been in her care for more than twenty years – only male family members are allowed to succeed her. For Mít, a part of her world threatens to break away. If grandmother Roan forgets, the memory of her distant homeland of Vietnam fades as well. The altar is the last link to her ancestors and her Vietnamese roots. As she searches for a connection between her two identities, which she thought were incompatible, she discovers not only that she will always be a part of the past, but that she can also shape her own future.
