Westfalia, 1873: Hans Herberholz returns home to discover that his farm has been pillaged in his absence. His wife was murdered and the cattle stolen. His daughter Elsie is all that he has left. To ensure the survival of his farm he has to wed her to a prosperous bachelor. But Elsie is in love with farm hand Willi and is carrying his child.

As a bad harvest threatens their livelihood, Hans is forced to question his principles and to sacrifice either his daughter’s happiness or the farm, his life’s work.
