Breaking Story: A Character-Based Approach to Story Prep
Professional writers never type “FADE IN” and begin the page-writing part of the script process without first “breaking the story”. This prep-writing phase is critically important to the success of any film or TV project. It is where a vast number of narrative elements need to be organized around the core idea of the story. While there are as many different ways to approach story prep as there are writers, this workshop presents a proven professional approach to the story-crafting process.
In this two-day workshop, participants will immerse themselves in a comprehensive approach to story prep: character development, brainstorming techniques and exercises, the story’s physical journey (Plotline) and psychological journey (Themeline), subplots, themes, and more. Writers will learn how to use this systematic process to create a scene-by-scene version of their movie or original TV pilot script. Thus prepared, they will be able to type “FADE IN” with confidence and they will reach “FADE OUT” with a solid draft of their writing project.
Scott Myers has written over thirty commissioned movie and TV projects at every major Hollywood studio and broadcast network, working with such producers as Larry Gordon, Dawn Steel, Wendy Finerman, Chuck Gordon, Castle Rock Entertainment, Working Title, Outlaw Productions, and others.
His writing credits include “K-9”, starring Jim Belushi, “Alaska”, starring Vincent Kartheiser, and “Trojan War”, starring Jennifer Love Hewitt. He is a member of the Writers’ Guild of America West and is an assistant professor at the DePaul University School of Cinematic Arts in Chicago. In addition, Scott has taught through the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program since 2002, receiving its Outstanding Instructor Award in 2005.
Scott graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor’s Degree (with Honors) in Religious Studies and from Yale University, where he received a Master of Divinity Degree cum laude. Introduced in college and graduate school to the writings of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung, Scott continues to explore the relationship of their theories to screenwriting and storytelling.
Scott’s blog GOINTOTHESTORY.COM is a major resource for screenwriters and filmmakers all over the world, and is the official screenwriting blog of the Black List. Recently, it was named “Best of the Best Scriptwriting Website” in the 20th Annual Writer’s Digest Best Websites for Writers list.
