Sensitive outsider Heiner devotedly cares for his grandmother Lena, who is in a wheelchair and plays a peculiar electronic instrument called a theremin that she operates hands-free. But she doesn't want to eat anymore.

Heiner lost his parents in a car accident when he was six years old and is now considering with a heavy heart whether to put Lena in a nursing home. Then the wild neighbor Juliane moves in under him, who befriends his grandmother directly, but is not particularly enthusiastic about Heiner. Under a pretext, Heiner sneaks into her housewarming party and gets into a drinking binge, which ends for Juliane with nausea in front of the toilet. Heiner helps Juliane out and a warm closeness develops between the two. When Heiner checks on his grandmother later, she has fallen out of bed: Femoral neck fracture, she must go to the hospital. Heiner is disappointed by Juliane and additionally confronted with finding his place in life without Lena.
