January 2025: News from ifs alumni and professors

The moving documentary ‘The Third Brother’ opens in cinemas on 30 January. Before that, it can be seen at the Stranger Than Fiction documentary film festival at the end of January. The project was developed by alumna Kathrin Jahrreiß (writer & director) in the ifs Masterclass Non-Fiction and funded by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. The film was edited by alumna Nicole Schmeier (together with Nicole Winterbauer).
Author and ifs alumnus Duc-Thi Bui has been nominated for the German Screenplay Award with ‘Ha-Neu / Berlin’ (together with Duc Ngo Ngoc), which will be awarded on 14 February at the Berlinale. We're keeping our fingers crossed!
On 4 January, ARD will be showing the docu-drama ‘Roncalli - Macht der Manege’ about Bernhard Paul, based on a screenplay by alumnus Christoph Mathieu.
September 5’ (director: T. Fehlbaum) will be shown in cinemas from 9 January. ifs professor Rolf Mütze (VFX executive producer) and alumnus Matthias Backmann (compositing artist) were part of the crew.
The film foundation-funded VR project ‘Human Within’ (director: Anne Weigel) will also be online from 9 January. The screenplay was co-written by ifs graduate Dominik Hochwald, together with Avi Winkler and Ari Eisner.
The new ZDF documentary series ‘FC Hollywood’ (director: Nicolas Berse-Gilles) will be available in the media library from 10 January. ifs graduate Johannes Oschwald (MA Serialstorytelling) was involved in the five-part documentary series about FC Bayern and the crazy 90s as a dramaturge and script consultant.
‘Einfach ungerecht’ airs on 12 January on KIKA, directed by graduate Thuy Trang Nguyen.
On 15 January at 8.15 pm, ZDF will be showing ‘Marie Brand and the dead au pair’. Alumna Friederike Dörffler is responsible for editing, student Fine Gumpert was there as a lighting assistant.
On 21 January at 20:15 on RTL, ‘Alarm für Cobra 11. Die Autobahnpolizei - Hoffnung’ can be seen - based on a script by alumnus Michael Grießler. The episode can already be streamed on RTL+ from 14 January.
The mini-series ‘A Better Place’ starts on 22 January at 8.15 pm on ARD. Alumna Karin Kaçi is one of the two head writers for the series, as well as alumni Nora Martin and Florian Trautmann (Assistant Set Decorator), Ricci Becker (Prop Designer), Elisabeth Feltes (Production Coordinator) and students Caio Salles Ackermann (AD PA), Lena Tondello and Luca Novelli (Assistant Production Manager). The series will be available in the media library from 10 January.
Alumnus and director Hanno Olderdissen is delighted to have received funding from the FFA for the production of the cinema film ‘Lassie and the Legend of the Wild Bear’.
