Esra is actually happy not to have any contact with her family.
She is bothered by the patriarchal structures and her mother in particular, with her passive-aggressive manner, is not someone Esra likes to spend time with. But when her father dies, she is forced to bring the body with her mother and three brothers from Cologne to her home village of Eşmepinar in eastern Turkey.
In Alevi culture, there is a compulsion to bury the body as quickly as possible. And so Esra suddenly finds herself in a country she thought she would never have to set foot in again. The family drives from Istanbul towards their home village. The car is cramped and stuffy. Esra is trapped. She has to deal with her brothers, her mother and the country.
