Hubertus Rath studied sound and image technology in Düsseldorf - after graduating in 1991, he became a research assistant at the Institute for Broadcast Technology in the research area of multi-channel sound for HDTV. In 1994, he moved to the sound studios of Bavaria Film GmbH as a mixing engineer and stayed there until 2014. Since then, he has been working as a freelance mixing engineer. Since 2016, he has been a professor for sound mixing and sound dramaturgy at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf.

To date, he has worked on over 180 films for cinema and TV. Among others, he mixed the German Oscar-winning films "Quiero Ser" by Florian Gallenberger and "Das Leben der Anderen" by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. For the latter he was nominated for Best Sound Design at the 2006 German Film Awards. In 2005 he received the German Film Award for Best Sound Design for "Touch the Sound" by Thomas Riedelsheimer. In 2009 he was awarded the prize for Best Sound Design at the 19th Filmkunstfest Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for the film "Shortcut to Hollywood". In 2016 he was nominated for the sound design of "Operation Zucker - Jagdgesellschaft" at the Prize of the German Academy for Television.
