The bleak farm

Westphalia, 1873: Farmer Hans Herberholz returns to his farm, which was plundered during his absence. His wife is dead, the cattle stolen.

Only his daughter Elsie is left to him. To ensure the preservation of the farm, he must marry her off to a wealthy man. But Elsie is in love with the farmhand Willi and pregnant by him. When a bad harvest deprives the farm community of its livelihood, the farmer is forced to question his principles and choose between his daughter's happiness and the continuation of his farm.
