After a serious car accident, Tommy is completely dependent on life-support machines and has to live in a laboratory run by his wife Nadja.
His state of health is so fragile that he is not even allowed to leave his bed and attempts to retrieve his lost memories seem unsuccessful. When the first memories of a world before the accident are awakened in Tommy, hope begins to germinate. As the boundaries between Nadja's devotion, hope and manipulation become increasingly blurred, Tommy's desire to be able to live freely again outside the lab grows stronger.
But suddenly Tommy's devices sound the alarm - his body cannot cope with the new developments. When Nadja leaves the room in a panic to fetch an emergency serum, Tommy manages to free himself from the life-support machines. He doesn't get far, as his body collapses completely after a short time, unable to survive without the machines. But shortly before he collapses, he discovers something that shatters his entire world view: he is just one of many copies, a prototype in an endless cycle of experiments.
