How far would you go to save your neo-Nazi brother?

Synopsis

Sue (26), a young lawyer, returns to her hometown Dortmund for her final state exams at a prestigious law firm.
But the feeling of having arrived doesn't last long: unnoticed by her parents, her younger brother Marco (19) has fallen under the influence of Alpha 18, a violent neo-Nazi gang.
Sue wants to get her little brother out of there no matter what. But the more she tries to get through to him – with conversations, understanding and pressure – the deeper she finds herself in a moral conflict. Soon everything that defines her is being questioned: her values, her integrity, her job at the law firm.
When Marco is involved in a deadly act of violence in an attack on a refugee shelter, Sue is faced with a dilemma: should she give him a false alibi in exchange for his promise to leave the scene for good? Or must she accept that she has lost her little brother, with whom she used to enjoy making up scary stories, forever?
THE RIFT is a family drama about sibling love and silent radicalization. The story shows how extremist ideologies have long since moved into the heart of society – to kitchen and coffee tables, into seemingly intact families. It tells of ruptures that run right through the private sphere and how difficult it is to build bridges when the abyss has become too deep.
