Jackfruit

For Mít (23), living between two worlds is nothing new.

As if at the push of a button, Mít can switch her identity between the tradition-conscious Vietnamese child and the self-determined queer Berliner. At the weekly dinner in her grandmother Roan's apartment, Mít is asked about her love life in typical Vietnamese fashion. Mother Mai, on the other hand, attaches more importance to a successfully completed degree than to a proper husband for her child. Either way, Mít has neither. Instead, Mít is dating Lara, who is the same age. As their affair develops into something more committed, Mít feels the need to stop hiding. But before Mít can muster the courage to leave her parents' nest, grandmother Roan is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Roan must move out of her small apartment, and she cannot take the ancestral altar that has been in her care for more than twenty years - only male family members are allowed to succeed her. For Mít, part of the familiar world threatens to break away. When Grandmother Roan forgets, the memory of her distant homeland Vietnam also fades. The altar is the last link to the ancestors and the Vietnamese roots. Searching for the connection for the two identities believed incompatible, Mít discovers that queerness has always been a part of the past and history, and therein lies the power to shape one's own future.
