Zwei Motten in der Finsternis

A girl travels into her subconscious - and has to find out again

Azra, a 16-year-old Muslim girl, is caught between sensations: The shy girl doesn't want to cause a stir at her small-town school because of her headscarf, and at the same time she wants to meet her strict parents' expectations. She also secretly has feelings for her rebellious friend Jenny. Azra's strategy is always the same: she withdraws herself as if she had no feelings at all. Jenny is the exact opposite of her: a warm, argumentative person. The problem: Jenny's life is getting more and more out of control. Her father beats her, and she is plagued by terrible nightmares. Azra wants to protect Jenny, but in the process becomes half-friend, half-mother.

One night, on their way home, the two end up in a terrifying cave where they lose sight of each other. When Azra comes out again, the world seems changed. The city seems abandoned as a backdrop. The few people who are there seem to watch Azra with hostility. Worst of all, Azra can't find Jenny - and her classmates and Jenny's father claim never to have known a Jenny.

Azra sets out to find Jenny, while all their conflicts escalate. Her classmates no longer just laugh at her, they physically attack her. Azra thinks she hears screams coming from Jenny's house at night as Jenny's father digs a pit in his backyard. Azra's parents brush her off and don't even seem to really notice her anymore. She is guided through this surreal world by Jenny in her dreams. Azra can only find Jenny when she finally faces her conflicts. And she can only leave this surreal world if she finds herself.
