My Name Akim

Akim, a trans* man and political refugee, struggles with bureaucratic and social hurdles in an initial reception centre.

He is denied his wish to learn German, as language courses are only available to recognised refugees. He keeps his trans identity a secret from his roommates and the other residents of the accommodation for fear of being discriminated against. Shunted off to the laundry, he lives in a world of speechlessness - until young Kamil and a trainee manage to slowly free Akim from his isolation. The story is based on the director's real experiences.
