On the occasion of the current publication »Storytelling in a Transmedial and Transdisciplinary Context« by ifs-Prof. Dr. Joachim Friedmann (Serial Storytelling), our guests Prof. Dr. Friedmann, film scholar Dr. Ezinne Ezepue, animation artist and game designer Eugene Ramirez Mapondera and multiple award-winning game designer Jörg Friedrich will discuss the topic »Shaping Society by Shaping our Stories« in a public online discussion. The panel – moderated by Prof. Dr. Lisa Gotto – will focus on the extent to which stories determine our reality: How realities are constructed from narratives, how certain narrative styles influence our view of the world, what political and social impact they have.
To discuss these topics with the contributors, moderator Lisa Gotto will delve into various themes, including the enduring impact of a colonialist mindset on the portrayal and the role of women in Africa. Related to this, the panel will explore the representation of traditional African folklore and culture in games and animated films, aiming to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the continent. Going back to Germany, the contributors will discuss the use of gaming as a tool to communicate social issues and strengthen democracy – as in Through the Darkest of Times, an multiple award-winning game that perpetuates the memory of resistance against National Socialism.
