Marsha Courneya is a Canadian researcher, writer, and producer with a background in both traditional filmmaking and the newer workflows of game design. She developed a specialty in technology ethics as a researcher at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she worked on new media projects and grant proposals around VR, NFTs, and virtual production. Her interest in technology ethics led her to act as co-chair for the Metaverse Standards Forum’s working group on Ethical Principles for the Metaverse, which is a non-profit consortium of over 2500 organisations. She has lectured on storytelling, digital rights, and intellectual property, and was a Mozilla Technology Fund awardee for a project on detecting gender bias in AI-generated texts. Her first co-authored book, out with Bloomsbury in 2025, is on the history of audio surveillance and its transformation from a military tactic to the voluntary abandonment of privacy in the age of AI.
