»It’s impossible«, they said. »It does not make sense«, they explained. »There is neither the infrastructure nor the budget needed«, they reasoned. And yet: the showrunner model is getting more and more popular in all parts of Europe. This panel, organized in cooperation with Creative Europe Media Desk Croatia and NEM Zagreb sets out to explore the phenomenon of Showrunning in Europe on stage in Croatia.

A showrunner is the lead creative of a series: a writer-producer tasked with guarding the creative vision from ideation through story development, pre-production, shoot, and post-production all the way through marketing. They carry the responsibility for all creative decisions, including the final cut, and are in close exchange with the production dept. regarding budget matters. This system originated in the United States, where the industry is very different from that in Europe. And yet more and more European series are produced in variations of this model – even in parts of Europe, where big budgets are rare, and the auteur tradition is still very much alive. Why is that? What makes this model so attractive? And what are the differences between showrunning in various parts of Europe? Three European showrunners – Teresa Fernandez Valdez from Spain, Marie Roussin from France, and Teodora Markova from Bulgaria - will explore this phenomenon, discussing for which types of productions a showrunning model makes sense and what issues still need to be addressed to truly reap its benefits. The panel will be moderated by Croatian writer and director Daria Stilin who is also a current participant in the European Showrunner Training.
