A new mother and playwright grows obsessed with the idea that her lead actress isn’t just taking over her play, but her life.
SYNOPSIS
Sonja, a strong-willed, heavily pregnant 30-year-old playwright, is offered a rare opportunity to direct one of her early plays – an abstract piece loosely based on the turbulent life of her immigrant parents. Desperate to reclaim her artistic identity, she returns to the theater just weeks after giving birth, but quickly finds the lines between her personal life and the play beginning to blur. Her relationship with her overly accommodating partner Till, an actor who steps into the role of “the father” at the last minute, begins to crack under the pressure of new parenthood and buried resentment. Meanwhile, Inge – a slightly older, effortlessly maternal and intuitive actress cast as “the mother” – appears to grow closer to Till and subtly rewrite Sonja’s script behind her back, triggering a growing paranoia that she’s being replaced, both on stage and in her real life. As rehearsals progress and her grip on the narrative slips, Sonja must confront a deeper question: is she losing control of the play – or of her own life?
