SYNOPSIS

When the lust for power meets religious hysteria, democracy is at stake. One man will fight back - if only he can control himself.

Professor Rodrigo Ferreira was once a rising academic star and award-winning journalist. But his life fell apart after he lost an election for rector to his former mentor and father figure, Fernando. Now, six months later, Rodrigo leaves rehab and returns to teach journalism at a prestigious public university. There he finds himself with few bridges left. As Rodrigo tries to reconnect with his broken family and rebuild his life, Fernando is arrested for corruption.

Despite their recent rivalry, Rodrigo believes the dean is innocent and has been framed. In a race against time to save Fernando, he investigates the case with the help of his protégé students. Together, they uncover a political conspiracy involving the local coal mining companies and a fundamentalist church to promote and elect a far-right candidate in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, his estranged wife, lawyer Mariana, takes on the region's largest coal mining company as a client, putting them on a collision course.

Inspired by a tragic event that shocked Brazil, »Leviathan« does not aim to portray the real people involved but instead sheds light on some of the dark forces at play. Set in a fictional Brazilian city in the late 2010s, we'll see characters fighting injustice and learning to put aside their petty differences to fight a threat that could devour them all.
