Alumni News in May 2026

Alumna Fiona Brands wins at the British Film Editors Awards, and her alumni projects are featured in theaters, on TV, on streaming platforms, and at festivals, among other places

Together with Zsófia Tálas alumna Fiona Brands was honored with the award in the Best Edited Series: Drama category at the British Film Editors Cut Above Awards for their work as editors on the fifth season of »Slow Horses« (photo). Congratulations!

Alumna Nadine Gottmann and Sebastian Hilger were honored at the German Computer Game Awards in the Story category. The award recognized their work on »THE BERLIN APARTMENT«. Congratulations! 

Alumna Antonia Schäfer has been nominated for the German Camera Award in the short film category for her cinematography in »They Made You Into A Weapon And Told You To Find Peace«. The awards ceremony will take place on May 8 in Cologne. We’re keeping our fingers crossed!

The Drama »HEIMSUCHUNG – EINE JAHRHUNDERTGESCHICHTE«, directed by Volker Schlöndorff, is celebrating its world premiere at the 79th Cannes International Film Festival. Prof. Sebastian Soukup is responsible for the production design. Alumna Zoe Lee Saba Krappen served as a set props assistant, and student Louis Loges as an additional dresser.
Also in the competition is »Gentle Monster« by director Marie Kreutzer. Alumnus Myron Kritenko served as best boy lighting on this film. 
The film »„Vaterland“ oder Ein Bule Namens Yanto« by Berthold Wahjudi will celebrate its world premiere on May 19 in the short film competition. Alumnus Paul Nägl und Student Dominik Salcher served as lighting assistants, while alumna Kim Hausner orked as a camera assistant.
 »Die Matriarchin« by Alison Kuhn will be presented at the Marche du Film in Cannes. Alumnus Christian Zipfel handled the editing.

On 21 May, the feature film »Mother Mary« (Regie: David Lowery), supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, opens in theatres. umerous ifs alumni were involved in this international film production: Maximilian Leo (Producer, augenschein Filmproduktion), Cora Pratz (Supervising Art Director), Nora Martin (Assistant Art Director), ifs student Lilli Manner (Art-Department Trainee), Jan Feil (Setrequisiteur), Elisabeth Feltes (Production Coordinator), Mike Fuhrmann (Assistent Location Manager), Lena Tondello (Assistent Production Manager). The visual effects were provided by ifs-Prof. Rolf Mütze (LAVAlabs) as VFX Executive Producer as well as the ifs alumni Matthias Backmann (compositing Artist), Christian Heynert (lead compositing Artist), Justus Maus (junior compositing Artist), Robin Pfister (3d Artist) and Timo Stampa (CG Supervisor). 

The documentary »Ehrenamt – Eine Kulturreise im ländlichen Raum« will also premiere in theaters on 21 May.  Holger Buff is responsible for the Sound Design, and Alumna Nicole Schmeier, among others, is responsible for the Editing.

When the second season of »Push« premieres on the ZDF media library on May 22, alumnus Luiz Melo Paiva e Silva will have played a part in it as a dialogue editor. The series will then be available on ZDF neo starting 27 May.

On 28 May »Achtsam Morden 2« premieres on Netflix.  Alumna Ramona Petersen was responsible for the costume design.

On 7 May the film »Schulweg« by alumna Lena Tondello will air on MDR's short film program “unicato”.

Alumna Antonia Halvadia Uhl directed four new episodes of the popular children's and teen series “Schloss Einstein,” which are now available on Kika.de.

Two new films from the crime series »Morden auf Öd – Ein Insel-Krimi« are now available on RTL+. The editing for the two episodes, “Ödkieker” and “Schrei der Möwe,” was handled by the alumnae Jeannine Compère und Friederike Dörffler

Filming recently began on a new feature film in the »Masurian Crime« series. The screenplay for the episode, with the working title »Nightmare«, was written by an alumna Nadine Schweigardt.

The team behind the drama »Taubenschlag«, including the producers and alumnae Helena Reiche und Lotta-Marie Mannsperger, is delighted to receive funding from the Kuratorium Junger Deutscher Film.

The short film »Weltuntergang« (WT) is being produced as part of the mediatalents Lower Saxony program for emerging filmmakers and is currently in post-production.. Alumni Robert Deçani (Director, Screenplay, Production), Jakob Dombrowski  (DoP), Jannik Urlaub (Editing and Mixing), Lars Bürmann (2. Assistant Director) und Moritz Marquardt (Gaffer) are among the team.

»Watching People Watching Birds« (DoP: a. o. Prof. Hajo Schomerus);
»Finding Connection« (Assistant Director: Marie Pauline Bagh, Editing: a. o. Patrick Hanemann)
»Wandergesell*innen« by Anna-Lena Ponath, developed in the Masterclass Non-Fiction of ifs, will be presented at DOK.forum Marketplace Roundtables 2026.
Alumna Loreto Plubins was on the shortlist with her project »Objekt« for the all inclusive Dokumentarfilmpreis 2026 of the festival.
Alumna Kim Münster was nominated for the 2026 VFF Documentary Film Award, which is also presented as part of the festival, for her film »Stille zwischen uns«. 

Ullstein has published alumna Nina Mayen's debut novel »Im Sommer der Wildbienen«.

ifs graduate Andrija Ilić Prša has been selected as one of nine writers for the VR-based writers’ room program »Words Across Europe«. From May through July, original series concepts will be developed in fully immersive VR writers’ rooms.
